Inflation was at like 9% for at least a year, then it was still at 6% for a year before and a year after the 9% year. So if cost of living went up 21% in 3 years and you only got a 2% raise each of those 3 years, that means you lost 15% of your income over those 3 years. The Fed wants to keep Inflation at 2%. If your employer gets generous and starts giving you a 3% raise from now on AND inflation never goes over 2% again, it will take you 15 years to make up what you lost in 3 years! Let that sink in! We need DEFLATION!

In this environment, the ONLY tool the government has to bring down inflation and prices is to massively cut taxes and regulations to spur productivity and give businesses an outlet to lower prices. Democrats are doing the EXACT OPPOSITE and wherever they have enacted their policies, businesses are failing.

Springhill recently shut down. Cherry Valley dropped off when the shootings happened. Best malls in northern Illinois are Fox Valley mall and Woodfield. Fox Valley dumped a lot of money into their lounge area which looks really nice. Very family friendly. Woodfield is still pretty nice and happening plus lots of other stores and resteraunts around it.

I am loving the series on Rockford area it brings back so memories. I lived with my family in Rockton form 1989 to 2001 with such fond memories of Rockford. We left the state for Fort Myers Florida and that has been wild ride. I would love to see what happened to State Street in Rockford where we used to do much of our shopping. I heard Machesney Park Mall is no longer also. I look forward to your travels to California another state I lived in brings memories back. Great work on keeping us educated!

Michael, that is still a great looking mall. So, it is NOT that the mall is old and outdated. There is a fundamental issued that is causing its demise. Inflation, starting in 2020, has sucked all the money out of the consumers' pockets. They don't have the cash to buy nonessentials. And... if they DID go out and put lots of purchases on their credit cards...well, then...in 8-12 months we would have another story about how stupid people were to go into debt to try and keep the lifestyle that they had before inflation took about 30% of their purchasing power.

Well I was living in Malaysia they are beautiful five star malls and they have fancy grocery stores inside things people need it's amazing how far behind America Has Fallen our airports look like the world airports in comparison to a lot of airports I've been in

Michael there's also a cultural element to this, if you go to South America the malls are packed. Latins really enjoy going, it's something to do, it's an event, it's a place to be seen & it's a place to buy things. It's like turning the clock back & it's fantastic to see there. Tilt used to be the Sears anchor. Furry Babies sold puppies but due to new Illinois laws they did end up closing. Several stores that had been there were chain stores that filed bankruptcy and closed the last few years. Shootings in and around the mall has probably been a big factor in less mall attendance. Normally there's a little more people walking around than the day you were there especially on the weekends. We've been in Rockford for now going on 20 years and I agree a lot has changed in those 20 years. Prior to moving out here my dad owned a business near the mall and the area was really starting to progress in such a positive way but is now once again going downhill. If you are still around here you should checkout Janesville Mall- that place is sad.

Walmart is dropping a lot of brands. Mom said she couldn't Find hienze vinegar at the supercenter. She requested I go to cannatas get her brand . I said she must be tripping , I went to my neighborhood Walmart mkt.She is correct the brand was totally absent . It's happening to a lot of products.

From the start I said people in the United States of America is soooooo quick to jump on the ban wagon, I like to put my eye's and hands of what I am buying feel the material when I am buying my clothes,every thing else it's not just not having money,people just stop shopping in stores,ohhh yea people go I am not saying that they don't go but when started shopping on line for everything that's when everything change we did it to ourselfs

I also grew up in Illinois. The north side of Chicago and the nortwest suburbs. And also move to Florida. A lot of people I grew up with are pretty fed with it at this point-especially the property taxes and crime. I wonder what Randhurst and Woodfield Mall are like these days. My teen haunts. Cheers.

The reason that real estate prices are so overinflated are the Colateralized Debt Obligations. If prices go down,the whole mess inplodes just like in 2008!

People aren't going to a store at the mall for something they can have delivered to them the next day on Amazon prime. People spend time differently in today's consumer environment. They support businesses which provide goods and services which can't be delivered to them the next day and purchase everything else on amazon. This presents challenges and opportunities. Interesting times ahead.

In the 2008 GFC I do not remember people cutting spending, yes they were losing their houses en mass but I never heard anyone say "I can't afford McDonalds". This time is going to be 10x worse, people have no money. Yes the rich are making bank with the markets but that's like 1% of people. The other 99% are totally screwed.

The decline of malls had been a topic way before the pandemic. The structural problems (online shopping and digital entertainment) have existed way before 2019.
